Warning
A “clean install” typically means erasing the disk partition(s) used for Windows and apps. Assume personal files on those partitions are gone unless you have verified backups.
Before you start
- Back up what matters to an external drive or cloud storage you can access from another device.
- Export licenses and keys you still need (some apps will not reinstall automatically).
- Grab drivers ahead of time if the PC is uncommon (Wi‑Fi/LAN packs from the manufacturer).
- Confirm your install path: retail PC, managed work PC, or custom build — policies differ.
1) Create Windows 11 installation media
- On a working PC, download Microsoft’s official media creation tool or use a Windows 11 ISO with a trusted USB writer.
- Use an 8GB+ USB flash drive (it will be erased during preparation).
- When finished, keep the USB plugged into the machine you are reinstalling.
2) Boot from USB
- Shut down the target PC completely.
- Power on and open the boot menu (common keys: F12, F10, Esc, F2 — depends on firmware).
- Select the USB device that matches your installer.
If you cannot get to a boot menu, open firmware settings (UEFI) and adjust the boot order temporarily so USB is first.
3) Install and partition the disk (erase carefully)
- When setup starts, choose your language/keyboard, then proceed to Install now.
- Choose Custom install (not upgrade).
- In the disk list, identify the Windows system drive/partition:
- If you intend a full wipe, delete the Windows partitions on the target disk and let setup recreate them.
- If you have multiple disks, be absolutely certain you selected the correct disk before deleting partitions.
- Select the unallocated space and continue.
Important
Separate data disks (D:, external drives) should remain untouched — unless you explicitly want them erased. “Delete” during setup is immediate and not easily reversible.
4) First boot: baseline setup
- Walk through region, keyboard, network sign-in (where appropriate), and privacy toggles.
- Install pending updates: Settings → Windows Update → check repeatedly until fully current.
- Visit the PC vendor support site and install recommended firmware/chipset + network drivers if anything is missing in Device Manager.
5) Verify the install
- Activation: Settings → System → Activation.
- Security baseline: Windows Security enabled; confirm firewall is on.
- Connectivity & sound: Wi‑Fi/Ethernet, Bluetooth, speakers/mic.
- Backups: restore a test file from your backup to prove restore works.
