Erase Volume in Recovery deletes data permanently. Read disk names carefully before confirming.
What you will achieve
Know every macOS Recovery utility and when to use each — without erasing data by mistake.
macOS Recovery is maintenance OS for disk repair, reinstall, restore, firmware utilities, and Terminal. Entry method differs Apple Silicon vs Intel. Choosing wrong utility erases data — read volume names carefully on fused APFS layout before confirm.
1) Enter Recovery
- Apple Silicon — shut down, hold power until startup options, click Options → Continue.
- Intel — restart holding ⌘ + R (or ⌘+Option+R for internet recovery install).
2) Restore from Time Machine
Full disk restore from backup — wipes target volume to snapshot state. Use when system unbootable and backup verified.
3) Reinstall macOS
Refreshes system files over network or partition — usually keeps user data on Macintosh HD Data volume. First try for broken updates.
4) Disk Utility
First Aid, mount, erase, APFS container management. Erase is destructive — read volume names twice on Apple Silicon fused layout.
5) Terminal and Startup Security
Terminal for csrutil, fdesetup, firmware tasks. Startup Security Utility on T2/Apple Silicon sets external boot and secure boot level.
6) Get Help Online
Safari with Apple support docs — useful when main OS offline.
7) Fallback recovery URLs
Internet Recovery downloads build closest to factory — may be older than you expect. Local Recovery partition uses last installed macOS recovery image — faster when intact.
8) Firmware password interaction
Firmware password required before Option boot — set in Recovery Startup Security or firmware utility. Lost firmware password needs Apple Store proof of ownership.
9) When to choose erase
Erase Volume only when selling or clean slate — “Erase Mac” in Sonoma+ ties into Find My disable flow. Reinstall without erase is default troubleshooting step.
Verify
You can enter Recovery on your Mac model; know which option to pick for reinstall vs restore vs First Aid.
Additional troubleshooting notes
If steps above do not resolve the issue on the first attempt, reboot once, confirm System Settings → General → Software Update is current, and retry with a second administrator account to rule out profile or keychain corruption in your daily user. Document exact error text from Console.app with timestamp — vague “it still fails” without logs wastes support time. On Apple Silicon, re-test after full shutdown (not just restart) because firmware and Thunderbolt controllers reset only on cold boot. Intel Macs should repeat test in Safe Mode to bypass third-party login items. Before erase or keychain reset, verify Time Machine or clone backup completed — batch 3 guides assume Monterey/Ventura/Sonoma/Sequoia paths in System Settings; search Spotlight for renamed panes if your macOS version labels differ slightly.
