What you will achieve
Enable Handoff, Universal Clipboard, and Continuity features between Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
Continuity ties Mac, iPhone, and iPad with same Apple ID — Handoff tabs, Universal Clipboard, Sidecar, camera continuity. Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi must stay on; devices must trust each other. Corporate Mac profiles sometimes block Continuity features.
1) Requirements
- Same Apple ID on all devices with two-factor authentication.
- Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi on; devices near each other.
- Handoff supported hardware — see Apple feature list.
2) Mac settings
- System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff.
- Enable Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
3) iOS settings
Settings → General → AirPlay & Handoff → Handoff on. Enable Cellular Data for Handoff if Wi‑Fi apart.
4) Features in use
- Safari tabs appear dock icon on other device.
- Universal Clipboard — copy on one, paste on other within ~2 minutes.
- Continuity Camera — iPhone as Mac webcam in supported apps.
5) Troubleshooting
Toggle Handoff off/on both sides; reboot; ensure no profile blocks Continuity on managed Mac.
6) Instant Hotspot handoff
Continuity includes auto hotspot — Mac connects to iPhone data without manual hotspot toggle when no Wi‑Fi. Requires same Apple ID, Bluetooth, and carrier plan allowing it.
7) AirPods handoff
AirPods switch between Mac and iPhone based on audio source — if wrong device steals audio, open Bluetooth on intended device and connect manually once.
8) Sidecar and Universal Control
iPad as second display needs Sidecar enabled on same Apple ID — Universal Control shares mouse across Mac and iPad; disable if cursor drifts to wrong screen during gaming.
Verify
Safari tab handoff icon appears; clipboard text pastes cross-device; Continuity Camera listed in video menu.
Additional troubleshooting notes
If steps above do not resolve the issue on the first attempt, reboot once, confirm System Settings → General → Software Update is current, and retry with a second administrator account to rule out profile or keychain corruption in your daily user. Document exact error text from Console.app with timestamp — vague “it still fails” without logs wastes support time. On Apple Silicon, re-test after full shutdown (not just restart) because firmware and Thunderbolt controllers reset only on cold boot. Intel Macs should repeat test in Safe Mode to bypass third-party login items. Before erase or keychain reset, verify Time Machine or clone backup completed — batch 3 guides assume Monterey/Ventura/Sonoma/Sequoia paths in System Settings; search Spotlight for renamed panes if your macOS version labels differ slightly.
